Accommodation

The provision of Traveller accommodation is the responsibility of local authorities under the Housing (Traveller Accommodation) Act 1998.   However, local authorities have consistently failed to complete their own Traveller Accommodation Programmes.

This leaves Traveller families living in overcrowded and substandard accommodation with 34% of the community effectively homeless and significant numbers without running water or electricity.

The development of decent accommodation where Traveller culture and identity is respected is vital in affirming Traveller identity and to Travellers’ health and well-being and educational and employment opportunities.
