We were delighted this week to hear of an award, by the Department of Justice & Equality, of €500,000 Dormant Account Funds to 7 organisations across the country to generate employment for members of the Roma Community .
This is in line with Government commitments in the Roma Needs Assessment and the National Traveller Roma Inclusion Strategy. Pavee Point looks forward to playing our role in advocating for employment for the Roma community in Ireland.
The Roma Needs Assessment shows that of Roma surveyed, 16% were in work, 17% had begging a source of income, 14% had no income and 52% were accessing social welfare supports. Regularising documentation was highlighted as a barrier to work and training – creating a vicious cycle where those most in need of employment supports cannot access them.
