Traveller Women Speak at Maynooth University to mark #IWD2016

Tessa Collins, Pavee Point’s Violence Against Women Programme and Kathleen Lawrence, Pavee Point’s Traveller Primary Health Care Project and Maria Joyce of the National Traveller Women’s Forum are speaking today at Maynooth University’s one-day conference to mark International Women’s Day 2016.

Tessa and Kathleen are speaking about the role of Community Development in advancing the rights of Travellers and Roma in the area of violence against women and health, respectively.

Dr. Akwugo Emejulu, Centre for Education for Racial Equality in Scotland, University of Edinburgh is also speaking along with Dr. Ailbhe Smyth, Former Director of Women’s Education, Research & Resource Centre UCD .

Other inputs on Gender, Diversity and Activism are being given by  Dr. Ciara Bradley (Maynooth University, Applied Social Studies), Migrants Rights Centre of Ireland,  Dr. Mary P. Murphy, Dr.Sinead Kennedy (Maynooth University, English), Dr. Clara Fischer (UCD, Philosophy) European Network Against Racism,  Prof Mary P. Corcoran (Maynooth University, Sociology) will feature and Dr. Pauline Cullen (Maynooth University, Sociology).

The conference was opened by  President Prof. Philip Nolan,  Fiona Tierney, CEO Public Appointments Service and Dr. Anne O’Brien, Kairos Communications. A Panel Discussion and Open Forum is being chaired by Professor Rowena Pecchenino, Dean of Social Sciences, Maynooth University.
