Gearing Up for Census 2016 – April 24th

Pavee Point is continuing its work with the Census office in the run up to the Census 2016 on the 24th of April.

This week we delivered an information session to Central Statistics Office Regional Supervisors. These are the key people involved in the Census. They manage the 400 Census Field Supervisors (who then manage the 2400 local Census enumerators). The training took place at Emmaus House, Swords. During this session with almost 50 supervisors we outlined some of the issues enumerators need to bear in mind when delivering and collecting Census forms to Travellers and Roma.

In turn the Central Statistics Office has carried out some positive actions to help promote Travellers and Roma participation in this year’s Census.

The main element of this is the production of an information DVD which can be used by local Traveller organisations and groups working with Roma to give information on the Census and to discuss any issues.

This will be accompanied by a Traveller specific information leaflet on Question 11 – the question on ethnic group and cultural background.

Both these resources will be available when Pavee Point organises regional meetings, with the support of CSO, during March to encourage Traveller and Roma participation and identification in Census 2016 on April 24th. We will update you with further information on dates and venues when these are confirmed.

In the meantime we wait to see if Travellers will be employed as enumerators – despite the early cut off in applications for these part-time positions – due to an overload of online applications.
