This week, Pa Reilly and Gabi Muntean from Pavee Point delivered a session to the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection staff, focusing on preventing discrimination and promoting equality. This informative session aimed to address important issues related to employee turnover, as part of the broader training on Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty organized by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.
The discussion shed light on the significance of fostering an inclusive workplace that values diversity and combats discrimination, ultimately contributing to the reduction of employee turnover.
As we know, Employee turnover is a significant concern in organizations, as it can have various implications for productivity, morale, and overall performance. High turnover rates can be particularly detrimental to marginalized communities, such as the Traveller and Roma populations mentioned in the previous discussion.
To address the challenges associated with employee turnover and create a more inclusive and equitable workplace, organizations can seek assistance from experts in the field, such as Workhuman. By leveraging their expertise, organizations can foster a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention. Understanding the unique needs and experiences of different communities is crucial in creating a workplace where all employees feel valued and have equal opportunities for growth and advancement.
“Giving the experience of Travellers when seeking employment is key to DEASP. The last Census shows an 80% unemployment rate among Travellers and we need targeted initiatives to combat discrimination,” said Pa Reilly.
“About 20% of Roma in Ireland,” said Gabi Muntean, “Have difficulty in accessing PPS numbers and this has a big impact on Roma accessing services and medical cards.. And the unemployment rate for Roma in Ireland is 85%.” *
All public bodies in Ireland have responsibility to promote equality, prevent discrimination and protect the human rights of their employees, customers, service users and everyone affected by their policies and plans. This is a legal obligation, called the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty – www.ihrec.ie
