Launch of The Rainey’s CD

Venue- The Teachers Club Parnell Square Date- December 8th 2006 Time- 8pm

A rare recording of Irish Traveller music is being launched by Pavee Point on Friday the 8th of December. The Rainey’s CD will be launched as part of Traveller Focus Week at a concert in The Teachers Cub in Parnell Square.

The Rainey family were a well known Travelling family who were renowned fiddle, flute and pipe players. This CD is the only known recording of the Rainey’s and is a recording by Professor Tony Knowland who was fortunate enough to record the Rainey’s at a gig in Letterfrack pub in Connemara in 1956.

The Rainey’s musical brilliance won them a dedicated following and the recordings highlight the importance of Travellers’ contribution to traditional music and culture in Ireland.

Traveller Focus week this year focuses on Traveller participation in cultural and public life in Irish Society.

Traveller music is an often overlooked genre making the Rainey collection all the more precious, unique, valuable and enjoyable. The release of the historical recordings of the Raineys by Professor Tony Knowland provides an opportunity to document and celebrate Travellers’ contribution to Irish music.

Dermot McLaughlin is a well known traditional musician, producer, broadcaster and writer who reviewed the collection of the Rainey’s music for Pavee Point.

“Good music should keep you awake at night. It should be the first thing you hear when you waken up any time of day or night.”

…Listen to the sound, rhythm, the wild energy, the pulse. This is music played from the heart, music for dancing as much as for listening. The Raineys play music with edges and curves in all the right places, music that has an unforgettable accent…”

“When I first heard these recordings of the Raineys some of the first thoughts to come into my startled head were motivated by a degree of fiddler- envy (where would you get a bow hand like that these days?) and an unsettling and inexplicable sense of loss and bewilderment (‘Where did all the that rhythm go to after the Raineys were finished with it?)” Mr Mc Loughlin said.

Tickets for the Launch of The Rainey CD and concerts are available from Pavee Point and cost €10. No admittance after 11pm.
