Briefing: Why recognise Travellers as an ethnic group?

A step in the right direction

At Ireland’s hearing for the UN Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights on 7 October, Alan Shatter, Minister for Justice and Equality, announced that the government was ‘seriously considering’ conferring recognition of Travellers as an ethnic minority group.  Pavee Point, along with other Traveller organisations, welcomed this decision.
